Empowering Healthcare Innovation: Optimizing AWS Infrastructure for $400,000 Annual Savings

ProviderTrust offers healthcare's most accurate exclusion monitoring, license, and credential verification system, with a client interface hosted on AWS for hospitals and providers. When 7Factor joined, they supported ProviderTrust’s transition to a new AWS production account for HITRUST certification, collaborating with the SRE team to streamline deployments, optimize infrastructure, and ensure high code quality, ultimately saving ProviderTrust $400,000 annually.

The Challenge

In ProviderTrust’s effort to maintain the conditions for the HITRUST certification, some systems, despite their success thus far, had room for improvement that 7Factor sought to reach:

SRE team’s heavy workload

The SRE team found themselves increasing their ticket response time, running slower team velocity, and having less time for infrastructure maintenance and system improvement. They partnered with 7Factor to help them maintain best-in-class services.

Significant downtime during deployments

Lack of infrastructure optimization led to long downtimes during deployments, which caused additional stress and unnecessary bandwidth on the internal team.

Overall Software Quality

Due to the SRE team’s workload and the recent implementation of systems relating to the HITRUST certification, there was room for significant software quality improvement.

Our Solution

7Factor provided additional support and engineering expertise for ProviderTrust’s SRE team to help alleviate their workload. This also allowed the 7Factor team to take a hands-on approach to assisting ProviderTrust.

During our partnership, 7Factor's team worked on different aspects of ProviderTrust's software and applied their expertise to improve and fix bugs throughout the systems. Our team managed ProviderTrust's custom AWS environments, ensuring stability and deploying each new iteration to the appropriate environment. Additionally, 7Factor's team managed ProviderTrust's custom API by performing maintenance, adding parameters, and fixing bugs.

Optimizing the deployment process was a key focus for the SRE team. Having this system be able to scale was a top priority as ProviderTrust continued to grow its client base. 7Factor implemented systems that increased scalability, ensuring the new version was live before the old one came down.

To improve the existing systems, the 7Factor team recommended modularizing ProviderTrust's Terraform, which was all kept in one repository. 7Factor worked with ProviderTrust to outline how this approach would be more efficient for their current and future needs.

ProviderTrust’s developers had honed their skills working within their existing systems. 7Factor’s experience brought a fresh perspective that helped the client’s team expand their expertise to new solutions. After ProviderTrust’s re-platforming, 7Factor’s team used their expertise to instill deployment best practices across the team.

Throughout the project, 7Factor's team emphasized the importance of maintainability, code quality, and sustainable development principles. Our team demonstrated the impact of these principles on product quality, ensuring future success for the SRE team.

“While working with ProviderTrust, we shared the importance of code quality and sustainable development principles for ease of maintenance,” explains 7Factor Engineer Joe Nace. “We wanted to show the effectiveness of these principles through our work instead of just claiming their effectiveness. It helped explain the why of our process when we could point to results.”

“I’ve worked with contractors before who’ve said, ‘You’re wrong, and this is how you have to do it,’ and 7Factor was all very thoughtful and open-minded, which is a really healthy way of baby-stepping to a better process. I thought they were so patient, and the ideas they brought were great.”
